Every route to a crypto checkout forces a bad trade today.
Building your own is a multi-month project: wallet connection UX, chain selection, social login, exchange-rate locking, and a long tail of edge cases that have nothing to do with your product. Custodial checkout products (CoinsPaid, BitPay) hand you the integration but take the funds: customer payments pool in the processor's wallets, you wait on their settlement schedule, and their security becomes your risk, the exact architecture behind roughly $1.8 billion in processor hacks between 2023 and 2025. The brand-name option narrowed sharply when Coinbase Commerce shut its merchant portal in March 2026: its successor checkout runs on Base only, supports USDC only, and bans iGaming outright, as do most card-first processors.
High-risk merchants are left choosing between an engineering project they should not need, a custodian they should not trust, and a product that excludes their vertical by policy.
